Custom stationery colors are matched by converting a buyer’s reference into measurable production targets, preparing material or ink samples, comparing them under controlled lighting, and approving a physical limit sample. Plastic color, printing ink, paper, lamination, texture, and gloss can all change how the same color appears.

What Type of Color Reference Works Best?

Recognized color-system codes provide a useful starting point, but they do not guarantee an identical result on every material. A code printed on coated paper may look different when reproduced in translucent PP or glossy PVC.

A physical product sample is often more reliable when matching an existing collection. Buyers should identify which part of the sample must be matched and whether the target concerns the plastic itself, a printed surface, packaging, or all three.

Screenshots and photographs are unsuitable as final standards because monitor settings, cameras, and lighting alter color appearance.

How Are Plastic Colors Developed?

Colored PP and PVC are produced by blending base resin or film formulation with pigments or masterbatch. The final appearance depends on pigment concentration, raw-material color, transparency, sheet thickness, surface texture, and processing conditions.

The stationery color matching process usually follows these steps:

  1. Review the color code or physical reference.

  2. Confirm the intended material and finish.

  3. Prepare one or more trial formulations.

  4. Produce material samples at the target thickness.

  5. Compare samples under agreed lighting.

  6. Select and sign an approved standard.

  7. Record the formulation for mass production.

A sample made at the wrong thickness may appear lighter or darker than the finished product, especially with translucent materials.

Why Do Printed Colors Look Different?

Ink is influenced by the surface underneath it. White ink printed on clear PVC behaves differently from the same ink on blue PP. Matte surfaces diffuse light, while glossy finishes make colors appear deeper or more saturated.

Lamination, varnish, curing temperature, printing pressure, and ink-film thickness can also change the result. Printed artwork should therefore be approved on the actual production material.

How Much Variation Is Acceptable?

Perfect visual identity between different materials may be impossible. PP, PVC, printed paper, metal hardware, and packaging reflect light differently even when developed around the same color reference.

Buyers and the custom color stationery manufacturer should agree on an acceptable range. A master sample can be accompanied by lighter and darker limit samples where color sensitivity is high.

How Is Batch Consistency Maintained?

Incoming resin, masterbatch, ink, and paper should be identified by lot. Production settings and formulations need to be recorded, while first-piece samples should be compared with the approved standard before the run continues.

Random checks throughout production can detect gradual color drift. Units from the beginning, middle, and end of the order should be compared before mixed cartons are packed.

What Should Buyers Confirm Before Approval?

The color brief should state the reference, material, thickness, transparency, surface finish, lighting conditions, permitted tolerance, and whether components must coordinate or match exactly.

Physical approval remains essential for custom stationery colors. A controlled sample, clear tolerance, documented formula, and in-process comparison provide a stronger basis for repeat production than relying only on a digital color code.
